First let me say all is well with Diane except some bruised pride. My son chewed me out for poor telephone usage. When I called to inform him that mom had had a accident, I would say " Mom has had a car accident she is at the Elyria hospital." No where on the 3 messages I left for them did I say any thing about her condition. He is right I will try to do better next time, but I hope it never happens.
We still do not know what happened, but on Friday morning  July 27, we had a huge thunderstorm come through, Lots of rain and lightning.. I remember it seemed to go on forever. At about 5:30 AM I got up to take my morning pills. Diane's alarm clock rang shortly after that as she had to open the doctors office that morning, which meant she would be leaving for work shortly after 6AM. Since my pills normally put me back into a heavy sleep I did not hear Diane leave for work
The first time the phone rang I thought Diane was still home and she had answered it. Then it rang again, this time I only heard 2 rings, finally it rang a third time, I awoke enough to realize that Diane had already left for work and I had not heard her leave. I picked up the phone and a woman was telling me that Diane had been in a accident and had minor injuries. She was being transported to a Hospital for treatment. I immediately drove to the Elyria hospital where they were taking her. When I arrived  I found her on a back board with a neck brace holding her head still. She still had window glass all over her.
Diane was crying because first she was uncomfortable being restrained on the back board, but mostly the head and neck brace was causing her pain.   The doctors did all the tests and found no problems except a possible bruised rib and some cuts from flying glass. She was released from the emergency room about 1 PM.
She was also crying because she did not know what happened. She had never had an accident,  The police had told her "it appeared she failed to stop at a 4 way red blinking stop light. and had been hit broadside by a large Dodge Ram Charger pick up truck."  The thunderstorm had caused a power outage in that area, which caused the traffic lights to stop their timed sequence and go into a "all stop" flashing red condition for all directions. Diane still does not remember seeing the traffic light at all., which is what she told the police officer.  A eye witness said the truck had stopped and was beginning to cross the intersection, when Diane approached from his right. Not stopping but continued into the intersection, where she and the truck met. The Buick was no match for the truck. Diane was hit broadside, spun around and traveled across 3 lanes backward, where she met a light pole, which stopped her. The light pole caused the damage to her trunk.
The question I have is if as the eye witness says the truck was stopped and had just begun entering the intersection " What kind of speed was he doing to cause all this damage. Remember he only had at the most 3 lanes to cross before he hit her. Look at the slide show and see if you can figure it out. Maybe because of the total combined speed of both combatants all the energy was released into the weaker of the two, which meant the Buick had no chance. But I do not buy that, I can not see how a truck traveling only 3 lanes could build that much speed to cause the amount of damage that we can see. Notice the parking lights and interior lights are still on. These pictures were taken over 30 hours after the accident. Must have been a good battery.
