The Purkey's

After leaving Siena's we drove to Durham NC. We were
going to visit the Frog's Aunt Dot
and
his cousins, Eddie and Doreen.
You may remember Doreen from the great family history that she wrote of
the Roehler family history, While I was putting together a photo history
of the Roehler family and especially Gig our grandfather. This history
can be read by linking to the Lamoreaux Family History page and
following the links to the
Roehler History. Doreen was
actively tracing the history of our family in the Pittsburgh area and
Western PA.
The first slide is Aunt Dot. She lived in the Miami area until about 5
years ago when Doreen he daughter was able to convince he to move north
to the Durham area so the family would be closer together again. I asked
her how she liked Durham and her quick answer was it was too cold.
The next slide is Aunt Dot and Eddie her son. It looks like he hasn't
found a barber he likes yet. Eddie is a year older than me and enjoys
driving around the area and feeding the deer that come out of the woods
each night. Eddie has a 30 year retirement from the school system in
Miami where they lived. Eddie always worked the midnight shift as the
janitor and to this day he can not sleep at night. He does sleep during
the day. Since he is awake during the night he watches TV and has a nice
collection of VHS movies, plus he watches out for the deer to come. The
next group of slides are of Doreen and her family. Wendy her
daughter was expecting their next child any day, as you can see.
One last thing I want to say about this slide show. I will bet you that
no one has ever seen a instrument like the one shown. It was called a
cord a matic. Look closely and you will see it was made from the parts
of an accordion. There were only 7 made, probably none sold. My
Uncle, Bill Purkey invented it while living in Miami. .If you look in
the slide show that I made of the Roehler family you will see a picture
of Doreen at about age 5 or 6 playing the Cord a Matic. Bill had Polio
as a child but could probably beat me in a foot race in his prime, crutches and all.
He made a living playing the piano in the Miami Beach hotels. He also
played the accordion. Bill died many years ago.
Now we must move on. Next stop would be Savannah
GA. This would only be a rest stop as the next day we were on the road
for Gainesville FL, to visit Dana and Bill Gregory and their family.
Looks like Diane is going to the dogs, or the
other way around the dogs are going to Diane
